Pokok Demokrasi – Only in Perak
March 3rd, 2009 Posted in bizzare, Malaysia, PoliticsThat’s what the locals in Perak are now calling the Albizia Saman or commonly known as the Rain Tree. This morning the embattled Perak state legislative assembly speaker tried to convene an emergency sitting but was prevented from entering the Perak state secretariat complex together with Pakatan Rakyat’s elected assemblymen. Their only option was a shaded tree about 200 meters from the secretariat building. There they held the emergency sitting and passed three motions.
The rain tree is quite common here in Sabah too. They are known to provide good shade as the tree can grow very tall and can have expansive tree branches. I remember when growing up, we used to climb up these trees. My former secondary school’s yearbook is also called The Raintree because there were many raintrees around the school campus. The downside to this type of tree is the roots. If planted near a building, the roots can crawl under the foundation and break the floor. Also the branches tend to break off under windy conditions.
Today, the tree has turned into a legend in Perak. Soon people are inciting poetry and singing songs about it. But one thing for sure if the branches fall there’s gonna be a wholesale insurance term insurance payout.

I worked in the Perak SUK building for a few years in the 1990s, went inside the MB’s office, dined in the SUK’s house, knew the place like the back of my hand, parked in the parking area where they did the emergency sitting, even perhaps passed by that tree so many times – so it was rather unreal to see all these happening in what seemed to be a stable, sedate state during my time there.

Ya how come? What was the turning point? I just wonder why BN is so desperate that they would employ dirty tactics. They sure picked one defiant speaker to contend with.
