My Favourite Candy Tainted with Melamine
September 26th, 2008 Posted in Food, Health
As a kid one of my favourite candy is the White Rabbit candy. I used to it a lot. Us kids use to call it gula susu which means milk candy. The recent tainted milk scandal in China was due to the existence of melamine in dairy products. Melamine is an organic substance that has a high nitrogen content. Melamine is used in dairy products to dupe tests into showing higher protein content in the product. Too much melamine causes kidney stones to form. Since it is mostly prevalent in infant milk, most victims are infants. The death of some infants raised red flags world wide.
