Hyaku-en fever
April 26th, 2010 Posted in Culture, SabahOne of my favourite stores during my short study-stay in Japan was going to the hyaku-en store. Hyaku-en means 100-yen. These hyaku-en stores sell everything for only 100-yen. Well the hyaku-en store has made its debut in Sabah with its first Daiso hyaku-en chain store opened at 1Borneo. Now Daiso has opened another outlet at Palm Square, CentrePoint last weekend. Prior to its first outlet, we of course had the RM2.00 store where most of the products are from China. So far I’ve noticed that the products at Daiso are produced in Japan, at least that’s what most of the labels shows cos’ everything has Japanese printed on them.
Anyways, I’ve been having Daiso fever lately eversince I have moved to new office space. Most of my office stuff were bought from Daiso at RM5 per item. I think when converted from 100 yen it’s more than the actual conversation rate….so it’s not exactly a hyaku-en store in terms of price. Despite the slight markup, one can get all kinds of livingware stuff there from acne washes to zipper products. Another aspect of these hyaku-en store is that one can catch a glimpse of the peculiar Japanese culture of having tool/gadget stuff for even the insignificant items. A word of warning for whoever planning to visit these store though….hyaku-en stores are addictive. By the way, there’s another hyaku-en store (not Daiso) opening soon at the Suria Sabah.
