Borneo International Marathon 2008
October 12th, 2008 Posted in Photography, Sabah
The Borneo International Marathon was held for the first time this year at Kota Kinabalu. There are three main marathon categories - full (42 KM), half (21 KM) and 10 KM. In conjunction with the event there are also mini marathon for kids at the starting venue.
Anyways, I had already survey the route the night before to find a suitable site. I selected the waterfront for my photo location. Fortunately I was the only photographer there, so I had the whole stretch to myself. I was already on site by 5 am as I had anticipated the full marathon runners to come through by 6am, so I had lot’s of time to relax. The light condition weren’t so good as it was cloudy and still dark so my first few photos were not satisfactory. I didn’t want to use the flash as I wouldn’t want to distract or blind the runners.
The African runners were the most difficult to photograph because of their darker skin and also they ran so fast even my auto-focus servo can’t keep up. There were a couple of runners who dressed up for the occasion. Some runners I know. Another two, called up my name..but I can’t remember their names. One runner to note however is blogger Kenny Sia with is MP3 player on his arms. I noticed there were many runners with MP3 players. I just wonder what do they listen to.
Who won the full marathon? Sure ’sapu’ by the africans. I heard from my sister it was the Kenyan guy. He was just a blur when I took his picture..very fast guy.
I took almost 4GB worth of pics. Here are just some of the photos.

These women were very sporting…they gave the marathon more character.

yup I saw the double cab drove by the waterfront. Yes the YS building would’ve been good but I chose where the waterfront instead as I anticipated the runners converging there and there no other photographers to compete with. Will post more pics. How did your shot turn out.

Hey there. Love your shots. That woman in the neon wig is a good friend of mine Suzanne, who raised around RM5000 for charities.
Thanks again for being a part of the Borneo International Marathon. You really did capture the feel of the marathon.
Thanks again
Shan

1. Kenny Sia linked to you in his post. I am very interested to know by how much your traffic jumped up
2. Yes, I dont remember reading about any news coverage about this on DE. That’s very strange… The names of the organisers didn’t ring a bell either.

Ya I didn’t expect him to link either…anyways it was kind of him to do so. Btw..my traffic more than quadrupled on Tuesday.
